Genesis

Born on June 2, 1961, in Kanchikacherla, near Vijayawads, Y S Chowdary was the youngest amongst four children. He was named after his grandfather and spent his formative years in Vijayawada, Miriyalaguda and Hyderabad. YS Chowdary has strong family ties, a testimony to this being Sujana is actually an amalgamation of the first letters of his mother’s name (Suhseela Kumari) and the last letter’s of his father’s name (Y Janardhana Rao)

Engineering and love for technology is ingrained in Y S Chowdhary’s genes. He holds a Masters Degree in Engineering from CBIT and comes from a educated family. His love for engineering and his insatiable curiosity as to the ‘mechanism of how things work” led him to create a dynamic business conglomerate called Sujana. Y S Choudary’s entrepreneurial brilliance is closely linked with Sujana’s dynamism.

The Yalammanchalli family originally hails from the twin villages of Ponnavaram and Peddamaradali. Y S Chowdary inherits a legacy of education from his paternal and maternal lineage. His paternal grandfather, after whom he was named, was an IPS officer, retiring at the high rank of a Deputy Inspector General of Police (IC). His maternal grandfather was a farmer who was also a Graduate. His father, Y Janardhana Rao, worked for the government of Andhra Pradesh where he held the position of Superintendent Engineer in the AP Irrigation and Power Department.

SUJANA -A Visionary realizes his dream

Beginning from the scratch, Y S Chowdary built up a global entity called Sujana step by step. The mid-80s saw Y S Chowdary take up the manufacture of a basic domestic appliance – fans. Soon, the domestic appliances market saw a new entrant in the ceiling fans and pedestal fans segment under the brand name ‘Padmini”. In no time, Padmini fans became a household name. The brand has to its credit pioneering product innovations and introduction of never-before product features (such as LED lighting, remote controlled fans, power savings etc). Once again, it was Y S Chowdary’s visionary prowess at work which successfully predicted market needs and delivered far beyond expectations.

From here on, there was no turning back as the dynamic combination of Y S Chowdary’s engineering prowess and visionary foresight saw him introducing one innovation after belting out impeccable business strategies and foraying into diversified businesses.

At a time when it seemed logical to capitalize on the Sujana’s success in Domestic Application, Y S Chowdary made his strategic business move – Reverse-integrating Sujana’s competencies, he moved into Precision Engineering foraying into the manufacture of ball bearings and castings at a time when the Indian market displayed several lacunae in this area. Today Sujana is one of the few names to reckon with in this niche segment.

The next big step was to reverse integrate further, and create capabilities in Steel. re-rolling mill, Sujana, under the vigilant eye of Y S Chowdary established itself as a leader in its category. Soon Y S Chowdary came up with another product innovation – Introducing to the AP market the first ever brand TMT Steel – Sujana TMT. Today, Sujana TMT is has evolved into a benchmark in this category. More product innovations followed enabling Sujana Steel to come up with a bouquet of product offerings. In the process, Sujana had achieved the seemingly impossible – transforming a commodity-led industry such as Steel into a service and in the process deliver valuable ROI to its customers., Sujana Steel is an acknowledged name in the industry offering a bouquet of first-time services under acknowledged brands from the Sujana stable. Sujana TMT, Smart Steel (Readymade Steel) and Sujana Plus (Premium Steel for mega constructions) are but testimony to the brilliance of Y S Choudary’s vision at work.

Y S Chowdary’s insatiable entrepreneurial zeal does not rest on laurels. What followed were rapid diversifications into Telecom & Power Infra, Urban Infra, Healthcare and International Trade which completed Sujana’s brand print as dynamic global entity. Sujana’s latest initiatives in hybrid Green Energy reflect Y S Choudary’s commitment to the environment and his innate insight to identify the critical energy needs in the context of today’s needs.

A joint initiative with the NTR Foundation, the Sujana Foundation has made a difference in rural and semi-urban areas in Andhra Pradesh through pioneering social initiatives that have touched lives and made a significant difference. in its initiation, the Foundation has always furthered the cause of education, contributing and managing scholarships for the socially and economically backward, encouraging and protecting the interests of the girl child and enabling primary and higher education.

The Foundation supports and runs several programs of education, for the children of its employees, for physically and mentally challenged children across south India, besides general support for several schools and colleges. Under Y S Choudary’s leadership, Sujana has also supported several sports initiatives at various levels, from supporting sports in schools and colleges, to sponsoring and training sportspersons in various games and sports.

“A happy nation is a healthy nation.” – Going by this adage, Y S Chowdary has single-handedly pioneered the Group’s foray into Healthcare opening one of the first major corporate hospitals in the city. The hospital also conducts regular free health camp and has established a College of Medicine which includes post-graduate and Nursing courses.

Y S Chowdary is married to Smt. Yalammanchalli Padmaja. They have a son and a daughter. A natural leader and a sensitive human being, YS Chowdary has struck an enviable balance between a successful entrepreneur and a caring husband and father. A versatile personality with multi-farced talents, Y S Chowdary’s other interests range from photography, vintage cars, reading, and initiatives to improve the society at large.
